Banhoek Fire Fighters Fund

Our mission is to protect the Banhoek Valley, its communities, farms, businesses and natural environment from the increasing risks associated with wildfires. Located within the Cape Floristic Region, the Banhoek Valley, as part of the Cape Winelands, is home to unique fynbos ecosystems that are naturally dependent on periodic fire for regeneration. While fire plays an essential ecological role, uncontrolled wildfires can cause significant damage to lives, property, livelihoods and biodiversity. The Fire Fighters Fund therefore aims to strengthen wildfire prevention, preparedness and response across the valley by supporting local firefighting capacity, improving coordination between stakeholders and helping to safeguard both the community and the natural landscape for future generations.

Supporters can donate to the charity by selecting and “buying” squares of land from an interactive "Google" map of the Banhoek Valley. The supporter does not legally purchase or own the land. Instead, the selected squares represent their donation and gives them a personal connection to a specific part of the valley. Their squares may be part of the Cape Nature reserves or their own home, farm or business. By linking each donation to a visible place on the map, supporters can see the area they are helping to protect and feel a stronger connection to the valley and the work of the charity.

The work of the Fund is broadly divided into two areas: Proactive fire avoidance projects and reactive firefighting efforts. We all know that prevention is better than cure so we need to support projects such as community education, alien clearing etc. Reactive efforts include supporting firefighters with food, hydration, appropriate clothing etc.
